Located on the Links adjacent to the Empress Gardens by the Spanish City the memorial was officially unveiled July 15th 1922 by the Duke of Northumberland and dedicated by Rev. F.L. Cattell, Vicar of St. Paul’s Church.
The memorial bears the names of 208 local men who gave their lives in the first world war. The names of 141 local servicemen who died in world war 2 were added later.
Whilst researching this grade 2 listed monument (on the National Heritage list for England) I was deeply saddened to read all of the bronze plaques listing all servicemen lost were stolen in 2009 thankfully these have since been replaced.
