2025, the line drawing project occupied most of my year and as I became immersed in sketching various tourist attractions I started researching the local history attached to the various buildings I was engaged in drawing, obviously Whitley Bay is known for it’s lighthouse and it’s Dome!
But what of the darker side hidden away in the past, Curry’s point for instance, the local history books mention that on the 4th September 1739 Michael Curry was executed for the murder of the landlord of the Three Horseshoes Inn, Hartley, his body was afterwards hung in chains (a chained cage) from a gibbet at the spot where his remains were in site of his crime!
Since the gruesome crime the headland where the gibbet once stood has been known as Curry’s Point and a stone marker and plaque was erected there to mark the 250th anniversary of the crime.
Before there was a lighthouse on the islet, there was an inn, local residents would cross the causeway to get a warm and a pint depending upon the tides, imagine if you would the stench, as Curry’s decaying remains had to be passed by to and from the causeway, imagine the rusting, squeaking chains as the corpse of Mr Curry swayed in the wind, the crows pecking away and what of Hallows Eve? villagers daring to pass by in the dark as old Curry and his murder of crows, swayed overhead, sadly the gibbet is no more but you can see where it was by the plaque.
